It's been almost a year since I have posted to this blog! Last year I created it to help chart my journey at CHOBC- Chaplain Officer Basic Course. You can still read those posted by clicking on the titles to the left. I'm going to start writing again now, for a couple of reasons. First, I'm heading back for the last phase of CHOBC in another month, and then will probably get deployed this fall, so I might as well practice. Second, I enjoy writing, and some of you might enjoy reading my thoughts. With that said, here I go:

Yesterday, President Bush laid out the case for continued support of the War on Terror. In a sense it saddens me that so many have turned against the war. The human cost has been tremendous, of course, but much less than other wars. The insurgency has been larger than many expected. But we overlook so much good that is happening: elections, the capture and removal of an evil and murderous man, new freedom for an oppressed nation, schools opening, women voting, and so on.

There is one other thing that is overlooked: We are fighting terrorists. Many have made the assertion that the Operation in Iraq is a distraction from the Global War on Terror (GWOT). Yet these same people lament the strength of the terrorist insurgency! Which is it?? Are we fighting terrorists in Iraq or not?

It makes me wonder about the power of the media to sway opinion. My observation is that the coverage tends to be overwhelmingly negative. Public support of the war has steadily decreased, but how can it not when every night we are treated to the same negative coverage?

Well, in the end, we'll see if it is worth it. I am glad that we have a president who is willing to stick it out. I trust him. He is not perfect; no human is. But I think he has done a commendable job, and I thank God that we have not suffered another terrorist attack on our soil, in spite of the many rants and raves that Al Qaeda has directed our way since 9/11.
